What is Impro?
'Impro' is an abbreviation of the word 'Improvisation' - which the dictionary defines as:
'A piece of music, drama, etc. created spontaneously or without preparation. '
'Impro', as the term exists in the performance world, however, usually refers only to the 'drama' part of that definition. Here at The Impro Shack, for example, we focus on creating theatrical scenes for each other via a series of 'Impro games' (As listed here - Our Games). These games will have you take the stage with a partner or two (sometimes more!), and performing scenes without any prior preparation.
The games can take many forms, for example, a game where you can only speak one word at a time with your scene partner - or a game where the audience can shout 'Change!' at any point, meaning you have to change what you just said to something completely different.
'Why would anyone do this?' I hear you ask. Well, it allows you to build confidence in a wonderfully supportive environment; it develops your ability to think creatively in your everyday life; and- most importantly - IT'S FUN AND HILARIOUS! Who doesn't want a break from the responsibilities of adulthood for a couple of hours a week?
